Part 1: Text & Translation

English: When you and I are together you often ask me questions about many things and I try to answer them. Now that you are at Mussoorie and I am in Allahabad we cannot have these talks. I am therefore going to write to you from time to time short accounts of the story of our earth and the many countries, great and small, into which it is divided. You have read a little about English history and Indian history. But England is only a little island and India, though a big country, is only a small part of the earth’s surface. If we want to know something about the story of this world of ours we must think of all the countries and all the peoples that have inhabited it, and not merely of one little country where we may have been born.

Bengali: যখন তুমি আর আমি একসঙ্গে থাকি, তুমি প্রায়ই আমাকে নানা বিষয় নিয়ে প্রশ্ন করো এবং আমি সেগুলোর উত্তর দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করি। এখন যেহেতু তুমি মুৌরিতে আছ আর আমি এলাহাবাদে, তাই আমাদের মধ্যে আর এই কথাগুলো হতে পারে না। তাই আমি স্থির করেছি যে মাঝে মাঝেই তোমাকে আমাদের এই পৃথিবীর এবং এটি যে ছোটো-বড়ো অনেক দেশে বিভক্ত, তাদের কাহিনির সংক্ষিপ্ত বিবরণ লিখে পাঠাব। তুমি ইংল্যান্ডের ইতিহাস এবং ভারতের ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে সামান্য পড়েছ। কিন্তু ইংল্যান্ড একটি ছোট্ট দ্বীপমাত্র এবং ভারত একটি বড়ো দেশ হলেও, পৃথিবীর উপরিভাগের একটি সামান্য অংশ মাত্র। আমরা যদি আমাদের এই পৃথিবীর কাহিনি সম্পর্কে কিছু জানতে চাই, তবে আমাদের সমস্ত দেশ এবং যে সমস্ত মানুষ সেখানে বসবাস করেছে তাদের সবার কথা ভাবতে হবে, কেবল যে ছোট্ট দেশে আমরা জন্মেছি শুধু তার কথা ভাবলে চলবে না।

Part 2: Text & Translation

English: I am afraid I can only tell you very little in these letters of mine. But that little, I hope, will interest you and make you think of the world as a whole, and of other peoples in it as our brothers and sisters. When you grow up you will read about the story of the earth and her peoples in fat books and you will find it more interesting than any other story or novel that you may have read.

Bengali: আমার ভয় হয় যে আমার এই চিঠিগুলোতে আমি তোমাকে খুব সামান্যই বলতে পারব। তবে আমি আশা করি, এই সামান্য কথাই তোমার আগ্রহ জাগাবে এবং সমগ্র বিশ্বকে এক বলে ভাবতে শেখাবে, আর এর অন্যান্য অধিবাসীদের আমাদের ভাই-বোন হিসেবে ভাবতে সাহায্য করবে। বড়ো হলে তুমি মোটা মোটা বইয়ে এই পৃথিবী এবং তার অধিবাসীদের কাহিনি পড়বে এবং তুমি দেখবে যে এটি তোমার পড়া অন্য যেকোনো গল্প বা উপন্যাসের চেয়ে অনেক বেশি আকর্ষণীয়।

Part 3: Text & Translation

English: You know of course that our earth is very, very old—millions and millions of years old. And for a long long time there were no men or women living in it. Before the men came there were only animals, and before the animals there was a time when no kind of life existed on the earth. It is difficult to imagine this world of ours, which is so full today of all kinds of animals and men, to be without them. But scientists and those who have studied and thought a great deal about these matters tell us that there was a time when the earth was too hot for any living being to live on it. And if we read their books and study the rocks and the fossils (the remains of old animals) we can ourselves see that this must have been so.

Bengali: তুমি তো জানোই যে আমাদের এই পৃথিবী অনেক, অনেক পুরোনো— লক্ষ লক্ষ বছরের পুরোনো। আর দীর্ঘকাল ধরে এখানে কোনো মানুষের বাস ছিল না। মানুষ আসার আগে ছিল কেবল পশুপাখি, আর পশুদেরও আগে এমন এক সময় ছিল যখন পৃথিবীতে কোনো প্রাণের অস্তিত্ব ছিল না। আজকের এই পৃথিবী যা সব ধরনের পশুপাখি আর মানুষে এত ভরপুর, তাদের ছাড়া এই পৃথিবীকে কল্পনা করা কঠিন। কিন্তু বিজ্ঞানীরা এবং যাঁরা এসব বিষয় নিয়ে প্রচুর পড়াশোনা ও চিন্তাভাবনা করেছেন, তাঁরা আমাদের বলেন যে এমন এক সময় ছিল যখন পৃথিবী এতই গরম ছিল যে কোনো জীবের পক্ষে এখানে বেঁচে থাকা সম্ভব ছিল উল্লেখযোগ্য। আর আমরা যদি তাঁদের বই পড়ি এবং পাথর ও জীবাশ্ম (প্রাচীন প্রাণীর দেহাবশেষ) নিয়ে পড়াশোনা করি, তবে আমরা নিজেরাই বুঝতে পারব যে এমনটাই নিশ্চয়ই হয়েছিল।
