Part 1: Text & Translation

English: In an attempt to change the subject, Kamal mentioned that a friend of his had found a snake in his bed one morning.
“Did he kill it?” asked Anil’s mother anxiously.
“No, it slipped away,” said Kamal.
“Good,” she said. “It is lucky if you see a snake early in the morning. It won’t bite you if you let it alone,” she said.
By eleven o’clock, after we had finished our dinner and heard a few more ghost stories – including one about Anil’s grandmother, whose spirit paid the family a visit – Kamal and I were most reluctant to leave the company on the verandah and retire to the room which had been set apart for us. It did not make us feel any better to be told by Anil’s mother that we should recite certain magical verses to keep away the more mischievous spirits. We tried one, which went –
Bhoot, prêt, pisach, dana
Chhoo mantar, sab nikal jana…
which, roughly translated, means –
Ghosts, spirits, goblins, sprites,
Away you fly, don’t come tonight…

Bengali: প্রসঙ্গ পরিবর্তন করার চেষ্টায় কমল উল্লেখ করল যে তার এক বন্ধু একদিন সকালে তার বিছানায় একটি সাপ পেয়েছিল।
“সে কি ওটাকে মেরে ফেলেছিল?” অনিলের মা উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।
“না, ওটা পিছলে পালিয়ে গিয়েছিল,” কমল বলল।
“ভালো,” তিনি বললেন। “সকালবেলা সাপ দেখা সৌভাগ্যের ব্যাপার। তুমি ওটাকে একা ছেড়ে দিলে ওটা তোমাকে কামড়াবে না,” তিনি বললেন।
রাত এগারোটার মধ্যে, আমাদের রাতের খাবার শেষ করার পর এবং আরও কয়েকটি ভূতের গল্প শোনার পর – যার মধ্যে একটি ছিল অনিলের ঠাকুমাকে নিয়ে, যাঁর আত্মা পরিবারকে দেখতে এসেছিল – কমল এবং আমি বারান্দায় সঙ্গ ছেড়ে আমাদের জন্য নির্দিষ্ট করা ঘরে ঘুমাতে যেতে অত্যন্ত অনিচ্ছুক ছিলাম। অনিলের মা যখন বললেন যে বেশি দুষ্টু আত্মাদের দূরে রাখতে আমাদের কিছু জাদুকরী মন্ত্র পাঠ করা উচিত, তখন আমাদের একটুও ভালো লাগেনি। আমরা একটি চেষ্টা করেছিলাম, যা ছিল এমন –

Part 2: Text & Translation

English: But the more we repeated the verse, the more uneasy we became, and when I got into bed (after carefully examining it for snakes), I couldn’t lie still, but kept twisting and turning and looking at the walls for moving shadows. Kamal attempted to raise our spirits by singing softly, but this only made the atmosphere more eerie. After a while we heard someone knocking on the door, and the voices of Anil and the maidservant. Getting up and opening the door, I found them looking pale and anxious. They, too, had succeeded in frightening themselves as a result of Anil’s mother’s stories.

Bengali: কিন্তু আমরা যতবার মন্ত্রটি আউড়াতে লাগলাম, তত বেশি অস্বস্তি বোধ করতে লাগলাম, এবং আমি যখন বিছানায় গেলাম (সাপ আছে কি না তা সাবধানে পরীক্ষা করার পর), তখন আমি স্থির হয়ে শুয়ে থাকতে পারলাম না, বরং এপাশ-ওপাশ করতে লাগলাম এবং চলমান ছায়া দেখার জন্য দেয়ালের দিকে তাকাতে লাগলাম। কমল মৃদুস্বরে গান গেয়ে আমাদের মনোবল বাড়ানোর চেষ্টা করেছিল, কিন্তু এতে পরিবেশটা আরও বেশি ভুতুড়ে হয়ে উঠল। কিছুক্ষণ পর আমরা কাউকে দরজায় কড়া নাড়তে এবং অনিল ও পরিচারিকার গলা শুনতে পেলাম। উঠে দরজা খুলতেই দেখলাম তারা ফ্যাকাশে এবং উদ্বিগ্ন দেখাচ্ছে। অনিলের মায়ের গল্পের ফলে তারাও নিজেদের ভয় দেখাতে সফল হয়েছিল।

Part 3: Text & Translation

English: “Are you all right?” asked Anil. “Wouldn’t you like to sleep in our part of the house? It might be safer. Mulia will help us to carry the beds across!”
“We’re quite all right,” protested Kamal and I, refusing to admit we were nervous; but we were hustled along to the other side of the flat as though a band of ghosts was conspiring against us. Anil’s mother had been absent during all this activity but suddenly we heard her screaming from the direction of the room we had just left.
“Rusty and Kamal have disappeared!” she cried. “Their beds have gone, too!”
And then, when she came out on the verandah and saw us dashing about in our pyjamas, she gave another scream and collapsed on a cot.
After that, we didn’t allow Anil’s mother to tell us ghost stories at night.

Bengali: “তোমরা কি ঠিক আছো?” অনিল জিজ্ঞেস করল। “তোমরা কি বাড়ির আমাদের অংশে ঘুমাতে চাও না? এটা বেশি নিরাপদ হতে পারে। মুলিয়া আমাদের বিছানাগুলো ওপাশে নিয়ে যেতে সাহায্য করবে!”
“আমরা একেবারেই ঠিক আছি,” কমল এবং আমি প্রতিবাদ করে বললাম, আমরা যে নার্ভাস ছিলাম তা স্বীকার করতে অস্বীকার করে; কিন্তু আমাদেরকে ফ্ল্যাটের অন্য দিকে এমনভাবে তাড়াহুড়ো করে নিয়ে যাওয়া হলো যেন ভূতের একটি দল আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে ষড়যন্ত্র করছে। এই সমস্ত কার্যকলাপের সময় অনিলের মা অনুপস্থিত ছিলেন কিন্তু হঠাৎ আমরা যে ঘরটি ছেড়ে এসেছি সেদিক থেকে তার চিৎকারের শব্দ শুনতে পেলাম।
“রাস্টি এবং কমল উধাও হয়ে গেছে!” তিনি কেঁদে উঠলেন। “তাদের বিছানাও চলে গেছে!”

A Night in an Old Building
Last winter, my two friends and I were returning from a village fair. Suddenly, a heavy storm started, and we were forced to take shelter in an old, desolate building. The building was dark, damp, and full of cobwebs. We were terrified by the eerie sounds of owls and bats. Every shadow on the wall looked like a ghost. We stayed close to each other, reciting prayers and trying not to panic. We couldn’t sleep a wink all night. When morning finally came, we rushed out as fast as we could, promising never to be out so late again.

A Magic Show
Last Sunday, I went to see a magic show at the local auditorium. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and mystery. The magician was dressed in a long black robe and a tall hat. He performed many amazing tricks, like making a rabbit disappear and bringing coins out of thin air. My favorite was the card trick. I was totally fascinated by his skill. The show made me very interested in learning some magic myself. It was a truly wonderful and memorable experience.
