Part 1: Text & Translation

English: The king of Kings, Emperor Akbar, who ruled over India was a great lover of arts, sciences, literature and music. One day, on a fine morning, he was walking in his vast garden. His garden was lined with trees that produced the tastiest and juiciest fruits in the whole kingdom. There were flowers of all shapes and sizes in his garden. He had his most trusted and favourite minister Birbal with him. But the great Emperor Akbar did not have peace of mind, the quality without which no one, not even the king of kings, can appreciate beauty.

Bengali: রাজাধিরাজ সম্রাট আকবর, যিনি ভারত শাসন করতেন, তিনি শিল্প, বিজ্ঞান, সাহিত্য এবং সংগীতের মহান অনুরাগী ছিলেন। একদিন এক চমৎকার সকালে তিনি তাঁর বিশাল বাগানে হাঁটছিলেন। তাঁর বাগানে সারিবদ্ধভাবে এমন সব গাছ ছিল যা পুরো সাম্রাজ্যের মধ্যে সবথেকে সুস্বাদু এবং রসালো ফল উৎপন্ন করত। তাঁর বাগানে সব ধরনের আকৃতি ও মাপের ফুল ছিল। তাঁর সঙ্গে ছিলেন তাঁর সবথেকে বিশ্বস্ত এবং প্রিয় মন্ত্রী বীরবল। কিন্তু মহান সম্রাট আকবরের মনে শান্তি ছিল না—এমন এক গুণ যা ছাড়া কোনো মানুষ, এমনকি রাজাধিরাজও সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করতে পারেন না।

Part 2: Text & Translation

English: Wise Birbal, noticing this, asked Akbar, ‘O great and powerful King, what is troubling you? You do not seem to be your usual self, for my king never fails to enjoy the beauty of the greatest kingdom this earth has ever seen.’ Akbar replied, ‘Birbal, my dearest friend, you are right. There is indeed a riddle that has been troubling me. An idle thought, which came to me in passing, is now my cause of worry. I am troubled because I cannot find an answer to a simple question—what is the fastest thing on this planet?’ Birbal said, ‘Is that all, your Majesty? Call your courtiers together. Let us see if one of them can answer. If not, then I am certain I can tell you of the fastest thing on the planet.’

Bengali: জ্ঞানী বীরবল এটি লক্ষ করে আকবরকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, ‘হে মহান এবং শক্তিশালী মহারাজ, কী আপনাকে কষ্ট দিচ্ছে? আপনাকে আপনার স্বাভাবিক মেজাজে দেখাচ্ছে না, কারণ আমার রাজা এই পৃথিবীর দেখা সবথেকে বড়ো সাম্রাজ্যের সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করতে কখনোই ব্যর্থ হন না।’ আকবর উত্তর দিলেন, ‘বীরবল, আমার প্রিয় বন্ধু, তুমি ঠিকই বলেছ। প্রকৃতপক্ষে একটি ধাঁধা আমাকে কষ্ট দিচ্ছে। একটি আলগা চিন্তা, যা চলতে চলতে আমার মাথায় এসেছিল, সেটিই এখন আমার উদ্বেগের কারণ। আমি চিন্তিত কারণ আমি একটি সহজ প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজে পাচ্ছি না—এই গ্রহের সবথেকে দ্রুতগামী জিনিস কোনটি?’ বীরবল বললেন, ‘ব্যাস এইটুকুই মহারাজ? আপনার সভাসদদের একত্রে ডাকুন। দেখা যাক তাঁদের মধ্যে কেউ উত্তর দিতে পারেন কিনা। যদি না পারেন, তবে আমি নিশ্চিত যে আমি আপনাকে এই গ্রহের দ্রুততম জিনিসের কথা বলতে পারব।’

Part 3: Text & Translation

English: At the King’s court, many heard the question that was troubling Akbar. Most were puzzled. Some said, ‘bullock carts’, others said, ‘horses’. But Birbal just smiled at them. After everyone had failed to satisfy Emperor Akbar, Birbal offered to answer his question. He said, ‘Your Majesty, it is the human mind!’ To prove it, he said, ‘Let the people of our kingdom present a problem to me. I shall show you how fast I can solve it using the powers of my mind alone.’ A man came forward from the audience. He claimed that his neighbour had sold him his well. Now, when he wanted to draw water from the well, his neighbour wanted to charge him money for it. Birbal smiled at the man and said, ‘I think the solution is rather simple. It is your well now, your neighbour should be paying you rent for keeping water in your well. If he wants you to pay for his water, he must pay for using your well.’

Bengali: রাজসভায় অনেকেই সেই প্রশ্নটি শুনলেন যা আকবরকে চিন্তায় ফেলেছিল। বেশিরভাগ মানুষই বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে পড়েছিলেন। কেউ বললেন ‘গরুর গাড়ি’, আবার কেউ বললেন ‘ঘোড়া’। কিন্তু বীরবল কেবল তাঁদের দিকে তাকিয়ে হাসলেন। সবাই সম্রাট আকবরকে সন্তুষ্ট করতে ব্যর্থ হওয়ার পর বীরবল তাঁর প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেওয়ার প্রস্তাব দিলেন। তিনি বললেন, ‘মহারাজ, এটি হলো মানুষের মন!’ এটি প্রমাণ করার জন্য তিনি বললেন, ‘আমাদের রাজ্যের মানুষকে আমার সামনে একটি সমস্যা পেশ করতে দিন। আমি আপনাকে দেখাব যে কেবল মনের শক্তি ব্যবহার করে আমি কত দ্রুত সেটি সমাধান করতে পারি।’ দর্শকদের মধ্য থেকে একজন মানুষ এগিয়ে এলেন। তিনি দাবি করলেন যে তাঁর প্রতিবেশী তাঁর কাছে একটি কুয়ো বিক্রি করেছেন। এখন তিনি যখন সেই কুয়ো থেকে জল তুলতে চাইছেন, তাঁর প্রতিবেশী তার জন্য টাকা দাবি করছেন। বীরবল সেই মানুষের দিকে তাকিয়ে হাসলেন এবং বললেন, ‘আমার মনে হয় সমাধানটি বেশ সহজ। কুয়োটি এখন আপনার, আপনার কুয়োতে জল রাখার জন্য আপনার প্রতিবেশীর উচিত আপনাকে ভাড়া দেওয়া। তিনি যদি চান যে আপনি তাঁর জলের জন্য টাকা দেবেন, তবে তাঁকেও আপনার কুয়ো ব্যবহার করার জন্য টাকা দিতে হবে।’

Let’s learn: Degrees of Adjectives (অ্যাডজেক্টিভ-এর তুলনা)

ইংরেজিতে Adjective (বিশেষণ)-এর তিনটি রূপ বা Degree থাকে, যা দিয়ে তুলনা বোঝানো হয়:

১. Positive Degree: যখন কোনো তুলনা করা হয় না, সাধারণ গুণ বোঝাতে এটি ব্যবহৃত হয়। (যেমন- great)

২. Comparative Degree: যখন দুজনের মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয়। সাধারণত Adjective-এর শেষে ‘er’ বা আগে ‘more’ বসিয়ে এটি তৈরি হয়। এরপরে প্রায়ই ‘than’ বসে। (যেমন- greater)

৩. Superlative Degree: যখন অনেকের মধ্যে তুলনা করে সবচেয়ে ভালো বা খারাপ বোঝানো হয়। এর শেষে ‘est’ বা আগে ‘most’ বসে। এর আগে সাধারণত ‘the’ বসে। (যেমন- greatest)

Let’s learn: Continuous Tense (ঘটমান কাল)

কোনো কাজ বর্তমানে চলছে বোঝালে Present Continuous Tense হয়। গঠন: am/is/are + verb+ing। (যেমন: It is raining now.)
অতীতকালে কোনো কাজ কিছুক্ষণ ধরে চলছিল বোঝালে Past Continuous Tense হয়। গঠন: was/were + verb+ing। (যেমন: He was studying yesterday.)

The Clever Fox and the Foolish Crow
A crow was flying for a long time. He became very hungry. Suddenly, he found a piece of meat. He picked it up and flew to the branch of a tree to eat it. Just then, a clever fox was passing by. He saw the meat and his mouth watered. He hit upon a plan. He looked up and said, “Oh beautiful crow! You have such a sweet voice. Please sing a song for me.” The foolish crow felt proud. As soon as he opened his beak to sing, the piece of meat fell down. The clever fox took the meat and ran away happily. The crow felt very sad for his foolishness.
Moral: Beware of flatterers.
