Part 1: Text & Translation

English:

A simple child,

That lightly draws its breath,

And feels its life in every limb,

What should it know of death?

I met a little cottage girl:

She was eight years old, she said;

Her hair was thick with many a curl

That clustered round her head.

She had a rustic, woodland air,

And she was wildly clad:

Her eyes were fair, and very fair;

-Her beauty made me glad.

“Sisters and brothers, little maid,

How many may you be?”

“How many? Seven in all,” she said,

And wondering looked at me.

Bengali:

একটি সরল শিশু,

যে হালকাভাবে শ্বাস নেয়,

এবং প্রতিটি অঙ্গে জীবনের স্পন্দন অনুভব করে,

সে মৃত্যু সম্পর্কে কী বা জানবে?

আমার দেখা হলো এক ছোট্ট কুঁড়েঘরের মেয়ের সাথে:

সে বলল তার বয়স আট বছর;

তার চুল ছিল ঘন আর কোঁকড়ানো,

যা তার মাথার চারপাশে জড়ো হয়ে ছিল।

তার মধ্যে ছিল এক গ্রাম্য, বুনো ভাব,

এবং তার পরনে ছিল বুনো পোশাক:

তার চোখ দুটি ছিল সুন্দর, খুব সুন্দর;

-তার সৌন্দর্য আমাকে আনন্দিত করেছিল।

“ভাই-বোন মিলে, ছোট্ট মেয়ে,

তোমরা কয়জন হবে?”

“কয়জন? সব মিলিয়ে সাতজন,” সে বলল,

আর অবাক হয়ে আমার দিকে তাকাল।

Part 2: Text & Translation

English:

“And where are they? I pray you tell.”

She answered, “Seven are we;

And two of us at Conway dwell,

And two are gone to sea.

Two of us in the churchyard lie,

My sister and my brother;

And in the churchyard cottage I

Dwell near them with my mother.”

“You say that two at Conway dwell,

And two are gone to sea,

Yet ye are seven! – I pray you tell,

Sweet maid, how this may be?”

Then did the little maid reply,

“Seven boys and girls are we;

Two of us in the churchyard lie,

Beneath the churchyard tree.”

Bengali:

“আর তারা কোথায়? আমি অনুরোধ করছি, বলো।”

সে উত্তর দিল, “আমরা সাতজন;

আমাদের দুজন কনওয়েতে থাকে,

আর দুজন সমুদ্রে গেছে।

আমাদের দুজন গির্জার প্রাঙ্গণে শুয়ে আছে,

আমার বোন এবং আমার ভাই;

আর গির্জার প্রাঙ্গণের কুঁড়েঘরে আমি

আমার মায়ের সাথে তাদের কাছেই থাকি।”

“তুমি বলছ দুজন কনওয়েতে থাকে,

আর দুজন সমুদ্রে গেছে,

তবুও তোমরা সাতজন! – আমি অনুরোধ করছি,

মিষ্টি মেয়ে, বলো, এটা কীভাবে সম্ভব?”

তখন সেই ছোট্ট মেয়েটি উত্তর দিল,

“আমরা সাতটি ছেলে-মেয়ে;

আমাদের দুজন গির্জার প্রাঙ্গণে শুয়ে আছে,

গির্জার প্রাঙ্গণের গাছের নিচে।”

Part 3: Text & Translation

English:

“You run about, my little maid,

Your limbs they are alive;

If two are in the churchyard laid,

Then ye are only five.”

“Their graves are green, they may be seen,”

The little maid replied,

“Twelve steps or more from my mother’s door,

And they are side by side.

“How many are you then,” said I,

“If they two are in heaven?”

Quick was the little maid’s reply,

“O master! we are seven.”

“But they are dead; those two are dead!

Their spirits are in heaven!”

‘Twas throwing words away; for still

The little maid would have her will,

And say, “Nay, we are seven!”

Bengali:

“তুমি ছুটে বেড়াও, আমার ছোট্ট মেয়ে,

তোমার অঙ্গপ্রত্যঙ্গ জীবিত;

যদি দুজন গির্জার প্রাঙ্গণে শুয়ে থাকে,

তবে তোমরা তো মোটে পাঁচজন।”

“তাদের কবরগুলো সবুজ, সেগুলো দেখাও যায়,”

ছোট্ট মেয়েটি উত্তর দিল,

“আমার মায়ের দরজা থেকে বারো পা বা তার বেশি দূরে,

আর তারা পাশাপাশি আছে।

“তাহলে তোমরা কয়জন,” আমি বললাম,

“যদি ওই দুজন স্বর্গে থাকে?”

ছোট্ট মেয়েটির উত্তর ছিল চটপট,

“ও মশাই! আমরা সাতজন।”

“কিন্তু তারা তো মৃত; ওই দুজন মৃত!

তাদের আত্মা স্বর্গে!”

কথাগুলো বলা যেন বৃথাই ছিল; কারণ তখনও

ছোট্ট মেয়েটি তার জেদেই অটল ছিল,

আর বলছিল, “না, আমরা সাতজন!”
