English: Velan was perfectly contented and happy. He demanded nothing more of life. As far as he could see, the people in the big house too seemed to be equally at peace with life. One saw no reason why these good things should not go on and on for ever. But Death peeped around the corner. One midnight he was awakened and told that the master was dead. “What is to happen to the garden and to me? The sons are no good,” he thought at once. And his fears proved to be not entirely groundless. The sons were no good, really. They stayed for a year more, quarrelled among themselves and went away to live in another house.

Bengali: ভেলান সম্পূর্ণ সন্তুষ্ট এবং সুখী ছিল। সে জীবনের কাছে আর কিছুই দাবি করত না। সে যতদূর দেখতে পেত, বড়ো বাড়ির লোকরাও যেন জীবনের সাথে সমান শান্তিতে ছিল। কেউ কোনো কারণ দেখতে পেত না কেন এই ভালো জিনিসগুলো চিরকাল ধরে চলতে থাকবে না। কিন্তু মৃত্যু কোণ থেকে উঁকি মারল। এক মধ্যরাতে তাকে জাগানো হলো এবং বলা হলো যে মনিব মারা গেছেন। “বাগানটার আর আমার কী হবে? ছেলেরা তো ভালো নয়,” সে সাথে সাথে ভাবল। আর তার ভয় সম্পূর্ণ ভিত্তিহীন বলে প্রমাণিত হলো না। ছেলেরা সত্যি ভালো ছিল না। তারা আরও এক বছর থাকল, নিজেদের মধ্যে ঝগড়া করল এবং অন্য একটি বাড়িতে থাকার জন্য চলে গেল।

Part 2: Text & Translation

English: A year later some other family came in as tenants. The moment they saw Velan they said, “Old gardener? Don’t be up to any tricks. We know the sort you are. We will sack you if you don’t behave yourself.” Velan found life intolerable. These people had no regard for a garden. Fortune, however, soon favoured him. The tenants left. The house was locked up for a few years. Occasionally one of the sons of the late owner came round and inspected the garden. Gradually even this ceased. They left the keys of the house with Velan.

Bengali: এক বছর পর অন্য এক পরিবার ভাড়াটে হিসেবে এল। ভেলানকে দেখামাত্র তারা বলল, “বুড়ো মালী? কোনো রকম চালাকি করার চেষ্টা কোরো না। আমরা জানি তুমি কেমন লোক। তুমি যদি ঠিকমতো আচরণ না করো তবে আমরা তোমাকে বরখাস্ত করব।” ভেলানের কাছে জীবন অসহনীয় হয়ে উঠল। এই মানুষদের বাগানের প্রতি কোনো শ্রদ্ধা ছিল না। তবে ভাগ্য শীঘ্রই তার সহায় হলো। ভাড়াটেরা চলে গেল। বাড়িটি কয়েক বছরের জন্য তালাবদ্ধ রইল। মাঝে মাঝে প্রয়াত মালিকের ছেলেদের একজন আসত এবং বাগানটি পরিদর্শন করত। ধীরে ধীরে এমনকি এটাও বন্ধ হয়ে গেল। তারা ভেলানের কাছে বাড়ির চাবি রেখে গেল।

Part 3: Text & Translation

English: Occasionally a prospective tenant came down, had the house opened and went away after remarking that it was in ruins. A year later another tenant came, and then another, and then a third. No one remained for more than a few months. And then the house acquired the reputation of being haunted. Even the owners dropped the practice of coming and seeing the house. Velan was very nearly the master of the house now. The keys were with him. He was also growing old. Although he did his best, grass grew on the paths, weeds and creepers strangled the flowering plants in the front garden.

Bengali: মাঝে মাঝে একজন সম্ভাব্য ভাড়াটে আসত, বাড়িটা খোলাত এবং এটা ধ্বংসস্তূপে পরিণত হয়েছে মন্তব্য করে চলে যেত। এক বছর পর আরেকজন ভাড়াটে এল, তারপর আরেকজন, এবং তারপর তৃতীয় জন। কেউই কয়েক মাসের বেশি থাকল না। আর তারপর বাড়িটি ভুতুড়ে হওয়ার খ্যাতি অর্জন করল। এমনকি মালিকরাও বাড়িটিতে আসার এবং দেখার অভ্যাস ছেড়ে দিল। ভেলান এখন প্রায় বাড়ির কর্তাই হয়ে উঠেছিল। চাবিগুলো তার কাছেই থাকত। সে-ও বৃদ্ধ হয়ে যাচ্ছিল। যদিও সে তার সাধ্যমতো চেষ্টা করত, কিন্তু পথের ওপর ঘাস গজিয়ে উঠেছিল, আগাছা এবং লতাপাতা সামনের বাগানের ফুল গাছগুলোর শ্বাসরোধ করে দিচ্ছিল।
