Part 1: Text & Translation

English: One day a car sounded its horn angrily at the gate. Velan hobbled up with the keys. “Have you the keys? Open the gate,” commanded someone in the car. “There is a small side-gate,” said Velan feebly. “Open the big gate for the car!” Velan had to clear the vegetation which blocked the entrance. The gates opened on rusty hinges, creaking and groaning. They went round the garden and said, “We have to clear every bit of this jungle. All this will have to go.” A young man told Velan, “You will have to go back to your village, old fellow. The house is sold to a company. They are not going to have a garden. They are going to build small houses by the score without leaving space even for a blade of grass.”

Bengali: একদিন গেটের কাছে একটি গাড়ি রাগান্বিতভাবে হর্ন বাজাল। ভেলান খুঁড়িয়ে খুঁড়িয়ে চাবি নিয়ে এগিয়ে গেল। “তোমার কাছে কি চাবি আছে? গেট খোলো,” গাড়ির ভেতর থেকে কেউ একজন আদেশ দিল। “পাশে একটা ছোটো গেট আছে,” ভেলান ক্ষীণ স্বরে বলল। “গাড়ির জন্য বড়ো গেটটা খোলো!” ভেলানকে প্রবেশপথ আটকে থাকা গাছপালা পরিষ্কার করতে হলো। মরচে ধরা কবজার ওপর তীক্ষ্ণ ও ঘড়ঘড়ে শব্দ করে গেটগুলো খুলল। তারা বাগান ঘুরে দেখল এবং বলল, “আমাদের এই জঙ্গলের প্রতিটি অংশ পরিষ্কার করতে হবে। এসব কিছুই ফেলে দিতে হবে।” একজন যুবক ভেলানকে বলল, “তোমাকে তোমার গ্রামে ফিরে যেতে হবে, বুড়ো। বাড়িটি একটি কোম্পানির কাছে বিক্রি করা হয়েছে। তারা কোনো বাগান রাখবে না। তারা ঘাসের একটি পাতার জন্যও জায়গা না রেখে সারি সারি ছোটো বাড়ি তৈরি করতে যাচ্ছে।”

Part 2: Text & Translation

English: There was much bustle and activity, much coming and going, and Velan retired to his old hut. When he felt tired he lay down and slept; at other times he went round the garden and stood gazing at his plants. He was given a fortnight’s notice. Every moment of it seemed to him precious. He would have stayed till the last second with his plants. The sound of an axe which roused him out of his afternoon sleep. It was just two days after he was given notice. The dull noise of a blade meeting a tough surface reached his ears. He got up and rushed out. He saw four men hacking the massive trunk of the old margosa tree.

Part 3: Text & Translation

English: He let out a scream: “Stop that!” He took his staff and rushed at those who were hacking. They easily avoided the blow he aimed. “What is the matter?” they asked. Velan wept, “This is my child. I planted it. I saw it grow. I loved it. Don’t cut it down.” “But it is the company’s orders. What can we do? We shall be dismissed if we don’t obey,” someone said. Velan stood thinking for a while and said, “Will you at least do me this good turn? Give me a little time. I will bundle up my clothes and go away. After I am gone do what you like.” They laid down their axes and waited. Presently Velan came out of his hut with a bundle on his head. He looked at the tree-cutters and said, “You are very kind to an old man. You are very kind to wait.” He looked at the margosa and wiped his eyes. “Brother, don’t start cutting till I am really gone far, far away.” The tree-cutters squatted on the ground and watched the old man go. Nearly half an hour later his voice came from a distance, half-indistinctly: “Don’t cut yet. I am still within hearing. Please wait till I am gone farther.”

Dear Rohit,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share an important thought with you. Recently, I read a story called “The Axe” by R.K. Narayan, which deeply moved me. It made me realize how cruelly we are destroying our nature by cutting down trees for our selfish needs.

Trees are our best friends. They give us oxygen, food, shade, and bring rain. Without trees, our earth will become a hot and barren desert. Global warming is already a serious threat. Therefore, we must take action now. I request you to plant at least one tree in your garden or locality on your birthday or any special occasion, and also encourage your friends to do the same. Let us pledge to make our earth green again.

The Honest Woodcutter
Once upon a time, a poor woodcutter was cutting wood near a river. Suddenly, his iron axe slipped from his hands and fell into the deep water. The woodcutter sat on the bank and started crying bitterly as it was his only source of income. Hearing his cry, the River God appeared. He dived into the water and brought out a golden axe. The woodcutter refused to take it, saying it was not his. The God dived again and brought a silver axe, but the woodcutter refused again. Finally, the God brought the iron axe. The woodcutter happily accepted it. Pleased with his honesty, the River God rewarded him with all three axes.

Moral: Honesty is the best policy.
